A Psalm by David.

29:1 Ascribe to Yahweh, you sons of the mighty, ascribe to Yahweh glory and strength.

  • (a) He exhorts the proud tyrants to humble themselves under God’s hand, and not to be inferior to brute beasts and dumb creatures.

29:2 Ascribe to Yahweh the glory due to his name. Worship Yahweh in holy array.

29:3 Yahweh's voice is on the waters. The God of glory thunders, even Yahweh on many waters.

  • (b) The thunder claps that are heard out of the clouds should make the wicked tremble for fear of God’s anger.

29:4 Yahweh's voice is powerful. Yahweh's voice is full of majesty.

29:5 The voice of Yahweh breaks the cedars. Yes, Yahweh breaks in pieces the cedars of Lebanon.

  • (c) That is, the thunderbolt breaks the most strong trees, and will men think their power able to resist God?

29:6 He makes them also to skip like a calf; Lebanon and Sirion like a young, wild ox.

  • (d) Called also Hermon.

29:7 Yahweh's voice strikes with flashes of lightning.

  • (e) It causes the lightnings to shoot and glide.

29:8 Yahweh's voice shakes the wilderness. Yahweh shakes the wilderness of Kadesh.

  • (f) In places most desolate, where it seems there is no presence of God.

29:9 Yahweh's voice makes the deer calve, and strips the forests bare. In his temple everything says, "Glory!"

  • (g) For fear makes them deliver their calves.

(h) Makes the trees bare, or pierces the most secret places. (i) Though the wicked are not moved by these lights, yet the faithful praise God.

29:10 Yahweh sat enthroned at the Flood. Yes, Yahweh sits as King forever.

  • (k) To moderate the rage of the tempests and waters that they not destroy all.

29:11 Yahweh will give strength to his people. Yahweh will bless his people with peace.
