I was inclined to suggest that a break should be suggested between verse 1 and 2 to perhaps satisfy both the obvious old age of the universe and the literal six day creation of life.

I will probably include a further comment on the suggestion in the Hebrew that the world became formless and void, and darkness was on the face of the deep. There does seem to be the hint of a suggestion that there could have been a pre-Adamite race of beings of some sort or ancient history on this planet preceding Genesis and the creative activities of God we find there. Speculative, yes - but the possibility is there.
